5 Simple Tips For Sober Livingbrett
You’ve beat your addiction, so now it’s time for a new challenge: living sober. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and to feel like you’re going to fall back into old habits. But, we have these 5 simple tips for sober living to help you find ways to make it through the days.
5 Simple Tips For Sober Living
1. Make Plans
Stay focused on goals. If you make plans for your future, you’ll have something to continue working for. Start with short-term goals, then work your way up to your long-term goals. Short-term goals should be simple things like eating a fruit every day, or reading a new book every week. Having these goals will help give you a sense of accomplishment. This is especially important if you’re feeling like you’ve made a mess of your life because of your addiction. These small accomplishments will help keep you from playing destructive mental games. Then once you’re in the groove of accomplishing your short-term goals, start making plans further out – maybe 5 month goals, or 10 months, even.
2. Learn Something New
Do you wish you finished those foreign language courses in school? Or would you like to be able to knit your own sweaters? Well, there’s no better time than the present to learn those skills. Take some time to check out what classes are offered at your local community center or community college. This will also be a good chance for you to find a hobby and meet some new people.
3. Join New Groups
This one ties in nicely with the previous tip. Join some groups that partake in activities you’re interested in. They don’t necessarily have to be classes, though. They can be groups that go hiking, play sports, go to museums, or do all of those things. And you don’t have to limit yourself to just one group, either. Join a few! Give yourself a chance to meet more people and make new friends. And be sure to join groups where you can find like-minded individuals who will help you remain strong in your sobriety.
4. Work Out
Not only is working out healthy and a good way to bring out your natural endorphins, but it also adds a routine to your day-to-day schedule. A routine is a good thing to have – and a nice short-term goal – and can be as simple as going for a walk every morning when you wake up, or every evening before you wind down.
5. Organize Your Living Space
Where you live is your sanctuary. It’s where you go to find peace. But you can’t find peace if you live in clutter. So clean up your home by keeping dishes from piling up on the counter, vacuuming and sweeping, dusting, and other household chores. In keeping your house neat, you help keep your mind calm. Being surrounded by a mess all the time can cause you to stress, so get rid of things you don’t need that are taking up space. And keep things you need often in specific places so you’re not always hunting for them when the time comes to use them. The organization shouldn’t stop at home, either. Carry it over to work. Keep your desk tidy to help keep your stress levels as low as possible at work as well.
A good tip within this tip is when you first come home clean, have a friend or family member go through your home to do an initial sweep. They can get rid of anything left behind from your addiction, as it’s best for you to not go through that on your own.
